Dr. Sajad S. Afshari is an aerospace engineer, researcher, and educator whose work bridges aviation management, safety and reliability, control systems, mechatronics, and data-driven decision-making. With a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology and the University of British Columbia, followed by five years of postdoctoral research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba, he has built a multidisciplinary career spanning higher education, applied research, and industry-focused innovation.
His expertise lies in the design, analysis, and improvement of complex aviation and aerospace systems, with particular emphasis on safety, reliability, human-centered decision-making, and operational performance under uncertainty. Drawing from backgrounds in control engineering, reliability engineering, stochastic systems, machine learning, numerical simulation, and experimental mechanics, Dr. Afshari develops practical and research-based solutions for safety-critical systems in aviation, aerospace, and related sectors.
Dr. Afshari’s work increasingly focuses on the broader managerial and operational dimensions of aviation systems, including risk-informed decision-making, system performance, reliability-centered operations, and the integration of advanced technologies into aviation environments. His interdisciplinary perspective enables him to connect technical system behavior with strategic and organizational concerns relevant to aviation management, operations, aviation safety, and long-term operational effectiveness.
In addition to his research, Dr. Afshari teaches computer science and programming at Mount Royal University, where he supports student learning in computational thinking, analytical problem-solving, and modern technical practice. His teaching reflects a strong commitment to undergraduate education and to preparing students for increasingly data-rich, technology-enabled professional environments.
Through his combined experience in research, teaching, and applied engineering, Dr. Afshari brings a distinctive perspective to aerospace and aviation education, one that links engineering depth with management relevance. His broader mission is to advance safer, more reliable, and more intelligently managed aerospace and aviation systems through interdisciplinary scholarship, applied learning, and industry-connected research.
His interests include aviation safety, human factors in complex systems, airport and airline operations, reliability-centered decision-making, and the strategic adoption of advanced technologies in aviation. This multidisciplinary approach allows him to connect technical system knowledge with the broader managerial issues that shape aviation organizations, including operational resilience, risk management, and long-term system performance.
